Raipur : Chief Minister and Forest Minister congratulate experts : Experiment of re-germination of 'Saal' seeds successful in Kondagaon

Experiment of re-germination of 'Saal' seeds in Adivasi-dominated regions of the State has yielded encouraging results. The experiment had been carried out on 8 June in Naxalite dominated district Kondagaon which sent a wave of excitement among the Forest Department officials - employees and the villagers. The experiment is being replicated in other Forest divisions also. The Forest Department officials are keen on conserving and protecting 'Sarai' (Saal) and have observed 'Mahotsav'. Chief Minister Dr. Raman Singh and Forest Minister Mr. Mahesh Gaagda congratulated the State Medicinal Plant Board Chairman Mr. Ram Pratap Singh, Forest Department officers, employees and forest-dwellers of the region.
'Saal (Sarai) Samwardhan Mahotsav' is being observed at Forest Divisions of Raigarh, Dharamjaigarh, Marwahi, Katgora, Korba, Jashpur, Surguja, Balrampur, Gariyabandh, Dhamtari, Kanker, North Kondagaon, South Kondagaon, Bhanupratapur and Bastar. 'Saal Vahinis' had been constituted with students, Vanaspati experts, members of Joint Forest Management Committees and Forest Department employees.
Chief Executive Officer of the Board Mr. Shirish Agrawal on Wednesday said that 'Sarai Mahotsav' had been organized in the forest divisions to spread awareness regarding re-germination of 'Saal' seeds. Mr. Agrawal said that 'Saal' (Sarai) is the State Tree of Chhattisgarh. The Saal trees caovers about 24 thousand 244 square kilometer which is 40.56 per cent of the forest area. the tree is huge and evergreen and the wood is very strong. The gum of 'Saal' trees is used for manufacturing'dhoop' which is used for religious purposes. The fragrance of the leaves of the trees purifies the environment. Several medicinal plants germinate under the shades of Saal trees.
