Raipur : Local bodies should be empowered economically and made self-dependent: Mr. Chandrashekhar Sahu : State Finance Commission's workshop on GST held

Chairman of Chhattisgarh State Finance Commission today inaugurated the daylong workshop on 'Public Finance of Local Bodies and GST in current scenario', held at new circuit house, Civil Lines, Raipur. This workshop was attended by elected officials of local bodies, district and janpad panchayats and gram panchayats of state. This workshop was jointly organized by State Finance Commission and Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi, in three sessions.
Chairman of State Finance Commission Mr. Sahu said in his address to the inaugural session of the workshop that it is necessary to make local bodies-panchayats self-dependent and economically empowered. He said that Goods and Service Tax Act (GST), based on the vision of one nation, one tax and one market, has come into effect in the country from July 2017. In the same context, a workshop was organized for elected officials of panchayats and urban bodies. Chairman Mr. Sahu further said that panchayats and urban bodies should have significant participation in implementation of GST for achieving the target of prosperous country and prosperous Chhattisgarh. State Government is taking every possible initiative for strengthening and empowering these bodies financially. Every year sufficient funds are provisioned for these bodies in the state's budget. The workshop was also addressed by member of Chhattisgarh State Finance Commission Mr. Nareshchandre Gupta.
In the first session of the workshop, Professor of IIPA New Delhi and Member and Member State Finance Commission Dr VN Alok threw light on the subjects of State's Public Finance and GST. Likewise in the second session and third session, Member of Chhattisgarh STate Planning Commission Mr. PP Soti and Joint Secretary of Union Panchayati Raj Ministry Mr. Sanjeev Kumar Patjoshi and Advisor Chhattisgarh State Finance Commission Mr. BK Lal talked about the important topics such as financial structure and development. Besides, in the third session, Ex-Secretary Union Urban Administration and Development Ministry Mr. M Ramchandrak and others talked in detail about financial resources and development of urban bodies. On the occasion, open discussion was held, wherein officials of panchayat and urban bodies got their queries answered and gave suggestions. Vote of thanks was proposed by Secretary of the Commission Dr BK Agrawal.
