Raipur : Chhattisgarh successfully completes POC on Blockchain Technology for Identity Management
Raipur, 16 October 2017
Chhattisgarh Infotech Promotion Society (CHiPS), the nodal agency for propelling IT growth & implementation of the IT & e-Governance projects in Chhattisgarh, has partnered with experts to complete POC (proof of concept) on deploying Blockchain technology for identity management. Alex Paul Menon, Joint Secretary & CEO, CHiPS, said, “There have been genuine concerns over privacy and data security, which we believe can be addressed with Blockchain technology. We seek to bring accountability to the data holders and implement privacy-by-design, find ways to avoid the risk of profiling of citizens, and ensure trust. With the age of Big Data, citizen databases, Unique National Identifiers, and digitization of daily transactions, it has become paramount to address the issue of privacy. Along with policy frameworks and laws, we also need suitable technology to address the issue. Blockchain ensures data integrity and ensures that an audit trail will be maintained for all changes or accesses made towards citizen data, superseding the hitherto unquestionable powers of the super-user/admin. The POC demonstrates the crucial functions needed for identity management, and additional POCs are in progress to demonstrate other use-cases as well.” Further, he added, “Blockchain technology goes beyond its traditional use in cryptocurrencies and can be used to address a variety of problems. We seek inspiration from Estonia, which is the most tech-savvy nation in the world, as well as African countries like Ghana which has partnered with Bitland to secure their land records with Blockchain. Many countries like Indonesia, Papua New Guineaetc have made progress in moving towards using Blockchain in delivery of public services. The technology itself is nascent and has an uncertain but promising future, and we don’t wish to be left behind.” CHiPS now seek to implement multiple POC’s and pilot projects in various domains by partnering with various startups and experts in the domain.
